Water Puppetry (Múa rối nước), a long-standing traditional art form of Vietnam, is a familiar name to the Alaskids of Class 2A1 at Alaska International Primary School. However, it wasn’t until their Local Education lesson on Water Puppetry Art that the children gained truly fascinating, hands-on experience with this unique art.

The students successfully completed three challenges: Finding the Puppet Friend, The Secret Door, and The Tiny Water Stage. As a result, the water puppet stage curtain opened for the 2A1 students, revealing images of the ancient water pavilion (Thủy Đình) and colorful wooden puppets moving agilely across the shimmering water surface. To the cheers of the audience, one amusing story after another unfolded.

Combining this with the information researched beforehand under the guidance of Teacher Phuong Anh, the children were thrilled to: touch the puppets, learn how they are controlled, role-play as water puppet characters, and memorize locations where water puppetry is frequently performed. The lesson was filled with joy and excitement.

To convey the value and meaning of this traditional art more deeply and closely, the Grade 2 students will travel to the Dao Thuc Water Puppet Village—one of the cradles of Hanoi’s Water Puppetry Art—as part of their October field trip.

Let’s prepare our eager minds to explore even further this distinctive art form, Alaskids!
