In a world where children navigate increasing stimuli, challenges, and pressures, Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) transcends being merely a subject; it serves as a vital psychological foundation for children on their journey to maturity.

At Alaska Academy, Advanced Grade K System, Mercury Class (5-6 years old) students engage in two weekly SEL lessons directly taught by foreign teachers. Through interactive stories, visuals, games, and gentle English-based discussions, children gradually become familiar with the five core competencies of the program:

Self-Awareness: Recognizing one’s emotions, thoughts, strengths, and weaknesses.

Self-Management: Managing emotions, controlling behavior, setting goals, and cultivating self-motivation.

Social Awareness: Developing empathy, respecting others, understanding social norms, and appreciating diversity.

Relationship Skills: Communicating effectively, collaborating, resolving conflicts, and building and maintaining healthy relationships.

Responsible Decision-Making: Considering ethical, safety, social factors, and consequences to make sound choices.
With the devoted guidance of our child-loving teachers, SEL not only ignites children’s enthusiasm for learning a second language (English) but also teaches them to love themselves and connect positively with others.

This week, in the lesson “How We Feel and Why,” the students of Mercury A2 Class learn together:

Become familiar with common emotions: happiness, sadness, worry, surprise, scared, etc.

Learn to explain why they experience these feelings.

Practice listening to their friends’ emotions and showing empathy.

Dear parents, we invite you to follow along and appreciate the significance of the SEL program. By engaging with your children through the small stories they learn daily, you can join them on this journey – because a child’s emotional development sometimes begins with simple questions:

“How do you feel today?” and “Why do you feel that way?”
